What should you ask any boat rental before you book?

1. Is the price per boat or per person? It changes the math completely for a group. Ours is per boat: $125 an hour whether you bring two people or 12.

2. How many people fit, and do children count? Ask whether babies count toward the limit. On our boats, everyone counts, babies included, up to 12.

3. Is the boat covered or enclosed? An open boat is a different trip in the midday sun or on a winter evening. Ours are fully enclosed, with windows that go up for a breeze and down to keep warm.

4. Who drives, and does anyone need experience? Some boats come with a captain; some expect you to know what you are doing. On ours, you drive, the driver must be 21 or older, and nobody needs experience. You get a tutorial and a map before you take the wheel.

5. Can you bring food, drinks and the dog? Ours: yes to food, yes to your own beer and wine, yes to the dog, who should bring a life vest.

6. Is parking included? Paying to park on top of the rental adds up for a group arriving in several cars. Ours is free, on site.

7. Can a group book several identical boats? A big group splits across boats. With 22 boats of one model, everyone in your party gets the same boat.

8. What happens if the weather turns? Get the answer before you pay, not after. Ours: All sales are final. If weather closes the bay, we move your rental to another day.

9. Can you get into the Naples Canals? Every boat on Alamitos Bay is subject to the same tide. Ask what the plan is when the tide is too high. Ours: you can still cruise around Naples Island, into Jellyfish Cove, Spinnaker Bay, Marina Pacifica and Mother’s Beach, and our tides page shows the next seven days.

10. How do you book and pay? We book online at any hour through Peek, so you see open times and pay in one place. This website never takes payment itself.

Why does the size of a fleet matter?

Because availability is what you are really buying. On a Saturday afternoon or a holiday, a small fleet can be booked solid while a larger one still has times open. With 22 boats, there are more start times to choose from, and a group of 30 or 40 has a better chance of finding three or four boats leaving together. Book big groups early anyway: busy days fill up.

Why does an enclosed boat matter?

It makes the trip work in more conditions. The roof keeps the sun off a group with young kids or older relatives. The windows go up for air on a hot afternoon and stay down on a cool evening. In winter, add a blanket or two. An enclosed boat is also what makes a December evening for the Naples holiday lights a comfortable trip rather than an endurance test.

How does a Duffy compare with a pontoon or a captained boat?

Each suits a different day. A Duffy is quiet, slow, covered and simple to drive, built for a group that wants to sit together and look around. A pontoon is more open. A captained charter takes the driving off your hands, and you pay for the captain’s time as well as the boat. Our guide to Duffy, pontoon and captained boats in Long Beach goes through the trade-offs, and the complete Duffy rental guide covers how our rentals work from start to finish.

Why are there no other company names on this page?

Because their details change and we cannot vouch for them. Ask each company the ten questions above, compare the answers, and choose the boat that suits your day.
