Propose on the Water

A Duffy is a quiet place to ask the question: an enclosed electric boat for just the two of you, the Naples Canals or the open bay, and a sunset you can time to the minute. $125 for an hour.

Why propose on a Duffy?

Because it is private and quiet. The boat is yours, so nobody else is aboard unless you invite them. The motor is electric, so there is no engine noise when the moment comes. And the boat is slow and steady, so the ride is never the thing anyone remembers.

The cabin is enclosed, too, which means a breezy evening or a cool December night does not spoil the plan.

When should you propose?

Sunset is the obvious choice, and the easiest to plan. Use the month-by-month sunset times to pick a start. For a one-hour cruise, start about 45 minutes before sunset so the light peaks while you are out. For two hours, start a little earlier and enjoy the dusk on the way back.

Whatever time you choose, arrive 30 minutes early. A proposal is no time to be rushing down the dock.

Where on the bay should you ask?

There are two good choices. The Naples Canals are narrow, quiet and lined with homes and private docks. Whether you can go in depends on the tide, so check the tides page when you book.

The open bay is the other choice: wider views, more sky, and the sunset in front of you. When the tide is too high for the canals, the bay is still yours, including around Naples Island, into Jellyfish Cove, Spinnaker Bay, Marina Pacifica and Mother’s Beach.

Should you drive, or bring a driver?

Either works. Whoever drives must be 21 or older. If you want both hands free, bring a friend to drive. Another idea: book a second boat for family or a photographer, so they can follow and capture the moment from the water. Each boat needs its own driver who is 21 or older.

No boating experience is needed. The Dock Master takes your boat to the end of the dock and gives your driver a quick tutorial and a map.

How do you add flowers or food?

Local vendors deliver flowers, food boards and décor for rentals. Call (562) 598-2628 when you book and we will point you to them, so you know what can be arranged before the day.

You can also bring your own: food, a cooler, and your own beer and wine for afterward.

How do you keep it a surprise?

  • Use the sunset as the excuse. “Let’s catch the sunset from a boat” explains the booking and the timing.
  • Call ahead from your own phone. If you are arranging flowers or a second boat, do it where nobody is reading over your shoulder.
  • Keep the ring secure. Over water, a zipped pocket beats a loose box.
  • Have a weather plan. All sales are final. If weather closes the bay, we move your rental to another day.

What happens after the yes?

Take your time. Cruise back slowly, call the family from the water, or head for the canals if the tide allows. The landing has restaurants along the water if you want to celebrate on land afterward; our guide to eating around Alamitos Bay has ideas.

How do you capture the moment?

Decide in advance. A friend in a second boat can film from the water without being in the way. If it is just the two of you, a small phone tripod on the table and a timer work. Practice the angle at the dock before you set off, and make sure the phone has space and battery. The light is kindest in the hour before sunset, which is one more reason to time it then.

Should you book one hour or two?

Two gives you room for nerves, a detour through the canals and a slow ride back to the dock afterward. One hour works if the plan is simple: out, ask, celebrate.

What does it cost?

$125 for one hour or $250 for two, for the boat. A second boat for family or a photographer costs the same again. See pricing and the complete guide to renting a Duffy in Long Beach. For an ordinary evening out instead, see date night on a Duffy.

Quick answers

Do I need boating experience to drive a Duffy?

No. The boats top out at 5 mph, and driving one is very similar to driving a golf cart. Our Dock Master takes your boat to the end of the dock, hands you the keys, and gives you a quick tutorial and a map of the sights.

Can we cruise the Naples Canals?

Yes, when the tide allows. When the tide is too high to go into the canals, you can still cruise around Naples Island, into Jellyfish Cove, Spinnaker Bay, Marina Pacifica and Mother’s Beach. The tides page shows the next seven days of high and low water.

What if we need to cancel or the weather turns?

All sales are final. If weather closes the bay, we move your rental to another day. If something comes up, call (562) 598-2628 as early as you can.

When should we arrive?

30 minutes before your start time, with your whole party. That leaves time to park, check in and board without cutting into your time on the water.
